HAMILTON
J. |
Civil
War - Co. C. State Trp. Mil.
John Kempshall Camp 1934 Sons of Confederate Veterans will have Memorial
Day services April 24 at the Drummer Twp Cemetery, in Gibson City.
The services will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will include a dedication
ceremony at the grave of Mr. Hamilton Barrow, a Confederate Soldier.
Mr. Barrow is the great-great-grandfather of Tom Barrow of Gibson
City. A re-enactment ceremony will also be included in the services
with seven participants taking part in this segment. Hamilton J. Barrow
was featured in an article in a newspaper shortly before his 101st
birthday, with the clipping furnished to the Courier by Ed Briggs,
a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. According to the article,
Barrow was to celebrate his 101st birthday that `Dec 14 and was the
oldest citizen of Ford County at that time. The article stated "This
grand old man has had a colorful career. Shot through the head in
'63 and piled up on the battlefield with the dead, retired from farming
in '86 on account of poor health, Ham Barrow is still in the land
of the living. He will celebrate his 101st birthday Saturday and friends
will call to offer that congratulations to this ancient fighter for
the Southern cause to which he dedicated his life in young manhood."
He was born on a farm near Middleton, VA, 12-14-1839, a son of Frederick
and arah Ann Barrow. He attended a country school about one mile from
home and a school and church combined about three miles from home.
He went for one term to school at Newton, Stephens City. He attended
school only in the winter after the corn was husked. Most of the time,
he had his father for a teacher. He assisted his father in his farming
operations until the Civil War broke out. He enlisted in the cause
of the Confederacy and served in the State Troop Militia Co. C. After
being placed on the pile for dead he was discovered by a woman and
her daughter who resided near the lines. After noticing he was still
alive, they took him to their home and cared for him until he was
able for them to take him to his father's home in Winchester. This
was in Feb. 1863. While recovering at his father's home he was taken
prisoner and taken to Camp Chase, Ohio. After returning home he volunteered
for service in Co. A. 11th VA Cavalry. While waiting for his uniform
to be made and a wound to heal on his horse's leg, Lee surrendered
and the war was over. He then continued to farm with his father until
the latter sold out in 1867 and in September of that year moved his
family to Illinois, first settling in Bloomington. Mr. Barrow and
his father and older brothers came to Ford County and the father purchased
the farm two miles east of what is now Gibson City. He hauled lumber
from Paxton and built a house and had it ready for the rest of the
family in the spring of 1868. Mr. Barrow married Susan Bradford on
3-27-1872 at Clarksburg, VA. And they went to housekeeping on his
father's farm one and a half miles east of Gibson City. While operating
this farm, he purchased 227 acres of land two miles northeast of Gibson
